MYELODYSPLASTIA

MDS Information
Myelodysplastic syndromes are a group of diseases characterized by the body's inability to make healthy blood cells. Myelodysplasia is referred to as pre-leukemia because myelodysplastic syndromes begin in the bone marrow stem cells and eventually progress to acute myelogenous leukemia.

Causes:

Benzene is one of few known casues of MDS.  Prior to mid 80's, benzene was found in varnishes, paint thinners, industrial solvents, degreassers, and penetrating oils.  Currently, people who work around jet fuel,  petrochemicals, plastics, and rubber manufacturing are often exposed to benzene.

Types of MDS:

Refractory Anemia (RA)

Refractory Anemia with Ringed Sideroblasts (RARS)

Refractory Anemia with Excess Blasts (RAEB) Refractory Anemia with Excess Blasts in Transformation (RAEB-t)

Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia (CMML)

Drug Treatments:

Common chemotherapy drugs used to treat MDS include idarubicin, mitoxantrone,
cytosine and daunorubicin.
