Johnson's Syndome (SJS) - Ibuprofen / Bextra
Toxic
Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN)
Both
SJS and TEN are two forms of a
life threatening skin disease that cause
sever organ damage, permanent disfigurement
and death.
Most cases
are associated with a reaction
to a drugs including: Antibiotics,
seizure medications, and certain nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen.
In
both illnesses, blisters develop on
the mucous membranes lining the mouth, urethra,
and eyes. The damage to the lining of the
mouth makes eating difficult. The eyes may
become very painful, swell, and become sealed
shut with pus. Sometimes, the urethra may
also be effected, making urination difficult
and painful.
The damage
to the skin with TEN is similar to
a severe burn and is equally life
threatening.
