CANCER
CHEMICAL EXPOSURES
Benzidine & Butadiene:
Benzidine used in the rubber and plastic industry
has been linked to bladder cancer.
Berylliosis or Chronic Beryllium Disease (CDC):
Beryllium is a toxic substance, causing serious
injury and death. Beryllium dust is classified
as toxic air pollutants by the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA). Beryllium causes scarring
of the lung which can lead to lung cancer.
The industries in which beryllium can be found
include:
• Metallurgy
• Metal working: copper & aluminum
alloys, jet brake pads, and aerospace components
• Ceramic manufacturing: semi-conductor
chips, ignition modules, and jet engine blades
• Ore and Scrap Metal extraction
• Electronics
Lead Poisoning:
Behavioral Problems and Brain Damage
Lead exposure at high levels can cause brain
damage; damage kidneys; and learning and behavioral
problems. In adults, lead can cause kidney
damage, muscle and joint pain, and nerve disorders.

Exposure to lead can happen from eating contaminated
foods or drinking water. Lead can damage the
nervous system and kidneys. There have been
recent reports of lead being found in Candy
from Mexico.
Vinyl
Chloride:
Vinyl chloride gas has been linked to brain
cancer and liver cancer (angiosarcoma).
Vinyl chloride exposure usually occurs when
a person inhales it or drinks water contaminated
with the chemical. The people most likely to
be exposed to potentially harmful levels of
vinyl chloride are those involved in industries:
• Fabricators of PVC & Plant
workers
• Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) manufacturing
• Plastics manufacturing
• Resins & Rubber manufacturing
• Automobile Production
• Furniture manufacturing
• Plastic Shower Curtain Manufacturing |
